Turkey’s defence ministry stated Wednesday it had began pulling troops out of Afghanistan, apparently abandoning its plans to assist safe Kabul’s strategic airport.

“The Turkish Armed Forces are returning to our homeland with the delight of efficiently fulfilling the duties entrusted to it,” the ministry stated in an announcement.

Turkey had greater than 500 non-combat troops stationed in Afghanistan as a part of NATO’s now-abandoned mission within the war-torn nation.

It had been negotiating with each the Taliban and Washington about taking part in a task in defending the airport after the US troop withdrawal, which is scheduled to be accomplished on Tuesday.

However the Taliban’s swift seize of the Afghan capital left these plans in disarray.

“It is crucial for Afghanistan to stabilise,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated because the troop withdrawal was introduced.

“Turkey will proceed to be in shut dialogue with all events in Afghanistan consistent with this objective.”
